A gesture-based interpretive dance, Liquid Dancing involves aspects of pantomime using fluid motions of the dancer's body and limbs. In its most basic form, movements are focused on the hands and arms, while advanced dancers utilize their entire bodies to provide wave-like movements. Liquid Dance shares common elements with Popping, a 1980s b-boy and funk-style dance.

There are several techniques and styles in the Liquid Dancing repertoire. The Hand Flow consists of a fluid-like motion between both hands. The most basic version is a simple wave motion, which begins at one hand and travels along their arms until they reach the other hand. This is the first move learned by dancers, and their approach to the Hand Flow determines their personal liquid style.

Other movements include Rails, Waves, Traces, Threads, Contours, Splits, and Builds. In Threads, dancers maintain an illusion of pulling parts of their body through holes created by the positioning of their arms. In contrast, Builds rely heavily on pantomime, where the dancer manipulates imaginary objects. All these moves are done to the rhythm and beat of the music.

Some dancers have brought different gear into their acts, including light-emitting gear. This can be done with LED lights, glowsticks, or even simple white gloves. Once the dancer moves to a strictly glowstick routine, it becomes a sub-genre called Glowsticking.

The origins of Liquid Dance are unknown, though it gained prevalence in the late 1980s and early 1990s underground rave scene. Some claim to have seen it as early as the mid-1970s. Scores of artists, including Funk Stylists, Glowstick Contact Jugglers, Mimes, and The Unknown attended raves regularly in the 1980s and 1990s. But, in the decline of the primary rave scene the dance moved to a worldwide club culture and underground street dance scene. Others claim that liquid dancing is simply a modified version of B-boy style dance inspired by Popping. This theory suggests that Liquid Dance simply toned down the motions to compensate for a lack of space and lights while at rave parties.

This dance comes from the song entitled “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It”, which was released by Atlanta rap group Dem Franchize Boyz from the album On Top Of Our Game. The dance was shown in the music video for the song, as well.

To perform the dance, move one shoulder forward and the other shoulder back. Then, reverse this movement and repeat with the opposite side while leaning backwards. Keep your lean back to one side while lifting up the opposite leg for maximum effect. Snapping of the fingers is added to the movements during certain parts of the song.

The dance saw large scale popularity at night clubs, mostly due to its ease to learn and perform. As the song grew in popularity to #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the dance’s popularity gained, as well.

Krumping comes from the acronym, KRUMP which stands for; Kingdom of Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise. It is a social dance movement exhibiting high intensity and radical acts of self-expression to rise above socioeconomic hardships such as poverty, crime, and violence. KRUMP originated among a group of youths on the west coast of which its pioneers are attributed to Tight Eyez a.k.a Ceasare Willis BIG MIJO aka Jo'Artis .

KRUMP is often performed to inter-mixed hip hop beats and is contrasted with fast, aggressive movements that run the gamut from foot stomps to chest pops and arm swings. These fast movements can be interpreted as a release of anger, inner turmoil, and an expression of rage or even frustration. It is often confrontational in nature and to an untrained eye, krumping may appear erratic however there are essential elements to this dance form. Some of these elements include: Sync Moves, Power Moves, Taunts, Puzzles, Chest Pops, Bangs, Stomps, and Arm Swings.

Additionally, there are three levels to krumping that are generally characterized by the krumper’s ability to express their energy through the energy of the music. Each level is illustrated by the krumper’s change in energy and movement and often readily acknowledged by the reception from those observing.

Krumpers are structured in groups known as families, or fams. Each fam consists of a Big Homie, who is considered the leader of the group. The Big Homie is also known to carry the responsibility of being a mentor and teacher. Family members usually hone their skills by apprenticing with their Big Homie. A new recruit or novice to krumping is called a New Bootie or Lil Homie. A Lil Homie will often take the name of his Big Homie (eg if Big Homie is called "Tight Eyes", Lil Homie would be called "Lil Tight Eyes"). Much of the social hierarchy in Krumping communities is determined through competition since krumpers face off against each other in battle scenarios.

Krumping is also often confused for another type of dance called Clowning which offers dance moves from a similar range of movement like Krumping. Clowning is however distinguished by its lighthearted approach as opposed to Krump’s aggressive and angry stylings. The execution of the dance moves in Krumping is also known to be much faster than Clowning.

As seen with the names of the three levels, there are also many terms in krumping that come out of everyday slang such as; “Labbin’” which means practicing for a battle; “Gett Off” meaning to get started or getting a battle started; and “Kill-Off” which means to end a battle.

Krumping became popularized by David LaChapelle’s documentary, Rize and can also be seen in many mainstream music videos and films. KRUMP has BATTLE compitions called EVENTS where krumpers battle to see who is the best examples of these events include KRUMP ARENA, THA D SESSION (Dunamis), THE FED, THE BLICC ZONE, THE REALM, SLAUGHTER HOUSE, THE CAGE, as well as many more.

Here are some other words used in the Krump slang:

BUCK-used to describe someone who is good at krumping

AMPED- when someone wants to dance

GETTING OFF-another name for dancing ex.- "man he was gettin off"

SHOOBIE-a krump groupie

NEW BOOTY-somebody that is new at krump

KILL OFF-used to describe a move or a loss (eg "man he got killed off" or "dang that move was a killoff")

BUCKHEAD- somebody who wants to dance all the time

Jumpstyle is a dance that began in Belgium and the Netherlands and which is performed to music of the same name. The music is distinctive with a hard beat and playful melodies. The hard beat is generally created with a distorted kick drum and a four on the floor beat. Often, the melodies have a happy feel, while the overall music resembles trance.

The dance is performed by kicking your feet forward and backward on the bass line of the music while moving your body in the opposite direction. To indicate a break in the beat, you lift one foot much higher than the other. The dance is fairly easy to perform if you have a good sense of bass rhythm.

The dance originated in 1994, but was rather unpopular in comparison to the widely popular Hardstyle in the Netherlands. For the next ten years, it was performed by the French and Germans, but failed to become widely popular. Suddenly, in 2004, it became extremely popular in Belgium and the Netherlands and its popularity has continued to accelerate.

Initially, Jumpstyle was considered just a variant of Hardcore Techno but has since established itself as its own genre of dance. Several sub-genres exist, including: Oldskool Jump, Tekstyle, Starstyle, Hardjump, Freestlyle, and Duojump.

Often, Jumpstyle is referred to as “happy hardcore”.

The Hyphy (pronounced, “High-Fee”;) dance style originates from an energetic cultural and musical movement bearing the same name. It emerged at the turn of the millennium in the San Francisco Bay Area and is said to have gotten its name from the Bay Area rapper, Keak Da Sneak who coined the word when his mother used to describe him as “hyperactive” as a child. Sneak, shortened “hyper” to the now famous, “hyphy”.

Unlike the vocabulary of slang and activities associated with the culture, Hyphy dancing is mostly defined by an attitude or approach to dancing. Although the Hyphy dance style does not offer a series of signature dance moves, it is characterized by exaggerated, often silly, dance movements and is often described as acting "stupid" or "going dumb" thus speaking to the cultural expression of Hyphy’s somewhat subversive and carefree nature.

Musically, Hyphy dancers commonly dance to songs within a musical genre baring the same name. Hyphy music is closely compared with the musical stylings of southern America’s Crunk carrying a similar beat but offer more lyrical stylings than its southern counterparts.
